Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. 2 Timothy 2:19
I read this word, iniquity, a few days ago in my Bible and it jumped out at me. Immediately I remembered an article I read the day before that spoke to this word, in light of where our country is today. It is a painful article to read, but one I think we need to read. The reason it was so powerful because it was well-written and sad, but true.
This article, credited to Bob Unruh of World Net Daily (WND.com) is for the most part an overview of an article written by Dr. James Dobson. The title is James Dobson: Biden has nation ‘teetering on the edge. I have highlighted the title with a hyperlink so that you can easily visit the article.
When I read this verse from 2nd Timothy, I shook my head in gratitude. Come what may, I am His and He is mine. For this cause, I endeavor to avoid iniquity.
I do not follow the news as closely as I used to. It is not “just news.” Most of it is not fit for the eyes of a child of God. I try to be informed without seeing everything. Some years ago, I was convicted by the first chapter of Romans. Toward the end of the chapter there is a list of serious offences before God, beginning in verse 18. I read those things and and I think of my deliverance …
And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Corinthians 6:11. Entirely, to God be all glory! He changed my life.
It was the last verse that got me: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. Romans 1:32. We are not even supposed to ponder wicked things and converse to no end about them. These things are not pure or lovely in any way. Certainly they are not of a good report.
God will not abide with iniquity; here is a list we can check our own lives by:
These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. Proverbs 6:16-19
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8
I name the name of Christ! That is a good report!
Christians can never sin cheaply; they pay a heavy price for iniquity. Transgression destroys peace of mind, obscures fellowship with Jesus, hinders prayer, brings darkness over the soul; therefore be not the serf and bondman of sin. Charles Spurgeon
After all that iniquity, how about something a little more palatable?!?
This coming weekend, the beginning of May I was invited to speak in 2 different churches for Mother’s Day. I will reschedule one before returning to America, sometime in the fall. The other one, I opted to offer a “Zoom talk.” The internet has been quite ornery, so I decided to record it and get it to them via Dropbox. The church was so gracious in giving me this option.
I have done this before and I will tell you that speaking into a camera while in an empty room is not easy. I love seeing the faces and smiles of recognition when I share a story of some sort. Our world has changed and technology can be a friend. As with my painting, I am a novice, but I am trying.
I thought I’d share the title, which happened to be the theme. Also the verses selected by the pastor’s wife are below. How meaningful the preparation was for me. At some time in the future I will rework it and share the main points. I think it will be an encouragement to you.
Psalms 56:8 Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?
Mark 14:3 And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.
